How do you describe the moment an idea hits you? The idea for mycarbonstash.com was more of a meteor strike than just a mere hit. It all started on a morning in July 2007. The location: A very sunny Sri Lanka . The future MCS team was having a lazy sunday lunch together. We had all been involved in different projects dealing with ethical products and ethical consumerism. One of us had also been trying to organise a local community clean up. Another guy was looking for a decent organic beer.
Subra, who worked on the ethical tea products wanted to find help in finding designers with knowledge of eco friendly materials and he wanted to offset his own footprint and make his company carbon neutral. Faz wanted to get in touch with anyone interested in joining the clean up he was organising. Reg wasn’t 100% convinced by the arguments of the IPCC . He was (and still is) something of a skeptical environmentalist, but he really, really liked organic beer. His argument is actually that, we didn’t know enough about the world’s climate to predict so far into the future and he wanted a solid information source BUT even if climate change doesn’t take place as fast and as soon as predicted, the green movement would only be doing good in many many ways.
This was the real inspiration for mycarbonstash. We were doing a lot of stuff by ourselves, but if we could find a way to connect with like minded people, others who wanted to make a change and help save the planet, what then could we achieve?
Educate.
Connect.
Offset.
There was also the conviction that to make a real dent on accelerating global climate change, we would all need to make personal changes in our lives. We wanted to create a way to accurately measure and offset the carbon emitted by our own lifestyles.
Governments and international bodies are doing things, but at an incredibly slow pace. If we are to meet this global challenge head on, we would have to ACT TOGETHER! NOW!
We wanted to create a way to enable people to get together and be the change.
