As delegates gathered in Bangkok to discuss the successor to the Kyoto protocol, news broke of a 1.1% increase in European emissions.Weak-willed governments, argue some European carbon-cutters, are the cause of the 1.1 percent EU emissions rise despite a 3-year-old “cap-and-trade” carbon system. As the world’s largest economy, the United States remains the world’s leading carbon emitter, and both the American and European economies are far bigger emitters than either China or India on a per-capita basis.The cap and trade system has been targeted by many economies as the way forward, and preferable to a straight carbon tax. Whereas a tax would put money into government coffers which could then be used on “green” projects, cap and trade encourages the private sector to do exactly that by themselves without too much government interference

Dell goes green - Round Rock-based Dell announced Wednesday it will use green energy to power its entire Austin headquarters. Using methane gas that landfill emits will help power 40% of the energy used by the plants 12,000 employees. Dell Vice President Paul Bell said the rest of the offices’ power is coming from wind, and said the energy initiative is part of the company’s efforts to become carbon neutral by the end of this year.
