- China is producing more CO2 than previously estimated, which would have a strong impact on the effort to stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gases. China is currently the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, but some studies show that China may have passed the U.S.’The projected annual increase in China alone over the next several years is greater than the current emissions produced by either Great Britain or Germany,’ the researchers said in a statement. The report that finds China guilty of increasing emissions could add to calls for China to sign up to binding cuts, something it has refused to do. - To combat smog, the EPA announced new regulations last night that lower the allowable levels of ground-level ozone to 75 parts per billion from 84 parts per billion. Specifically, the EPA staff had recommended tighter fuel-economy standards for cars than were included in a law passed by Congress last year and signed by President Bush.
- Spanish renewable energy firm Sener and Abu Dhabi’s clean-energy initiative, Masdar, will come together to provide solar power to many countries such as Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States. One of the designs that the venture intends to use is a solar receiver tower to be built in Abu Dhabi.
